About ACE inhibitors

ACE inhibitors lower blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels, and are also used after heart attacks, in heart failure and to protect the kidneys in diabetes. Their names end in -pril: enalapril is sold here as Envas and Enam, lisinopril as Listril and Lipril, ramipril as Ramistar and perindopril as Coversyl.

A dry, tickly cough is the best-known side effect; if it happens, a doctor may switch you to an ARB. ACE inhibitors are not used in pregnancy.
