About cephalosporins

Cephalosporins are close relatives of penicillin and are grouped into generations. Cephalexin, sold here as Sporidex and Cephadex, is an older first-generation drug used for skin and urinary infections. Cefuroxime (Ceftum) is second generation, and cefixime (Cefix, Hifi) and cefpodoxime (Podocip) are oral third-generation drugs with wider cover, often used for chest, ear and urinary infections.

A small number of people allergic to penicillin also react to cephalosporins, so mention any allergy to your doctor.
