Overactive bladder, prostate and bladder pain medicines we stock

The medicines here address three common problems. For overactive bladder (urgency, frequency and leaking) there is mirabegron at 50MG, plus the antimuscarinics tolterodine, darifenacin and oxybutynin. For urinary symptoms from an enlarged prostate there are the alpha blockers alfuzosin and silodosin. Desmopressin reduces urine production overnight, pentosan polysulfate is used for interstitial cystitis, and phenazopyridine relieves the burning of an irritated bladder.

Two ways to calm an overactive bladder

Mirabegron and the antimuscarinics work differently. Antimuscarinics commonly cause dry mouth and constipation, and in older people can affect memory and concentration. Mirabegron avoids those effects but can raise blood pressure, which is worth checking. Either usually takes several weeks to reach its full effect.

Alpha blockers and dizziness

Alfuzosin and silodosin relax the prostate and the bladder neck, and the first doses can cause dizziness on standing, so they are taken after a meal as directed, often in the evening. Anyone planning cataract surgery should mention them, because they affect the iris during the operation.

Short-term relief and warning signs

Phenazopyridine treats symptoms rather than infection and is used for a couple of days at most; it turns urine orange-red, which is expected. Desmopressin needs evening fluid intake limited because it can lower sodium. Blood in the urine, fever or loin pain need a doctor rather than self-treatment.
