First and second generation antipsychotics we stock

This category holds both generations of antipsychotic. Haloperidol and chlorpromazine are first generation, or typical, medicines and among the oldest in psychiatry. Lurasidone, amisulpride and ziprasidone are second generation, or atypical, medicines that act on dopamine and, to varying degrees, serotonin receptors.

Why one antipsychotic is not swapped for another

The molecules differ in their side effects more than in their main effect, and those differences usually decide which one is prescribed. Some are more sedating, some more likely to affect weight and blood sugar, some raise the hormone prolactin, and some cause movement effects such as restlessness or stiffness. Strengths are not equivalent between molecules either, so changing medicine is a decision for the prescriber.

Taking them correctly

Lurasidone and ziprasidone are only absorbed properly when taken with a meal, which is easy to miss and makes a real difference to how well they work. Ziprasidone can affect heart rhythm, so other medicines with the same effect need checking first. Doses usually start low and are adjusted over time.

Stopping and monitoring

Antipsychotics are not stopped abruptly, and relapse after stopping is common, so any change is best planned with the prescriber. Weight, blood sugar and blood lipids are usually monitored on longer treatment. Every listing shows the molecule, strength and pack size, with the guaranteed minimum expiry date. All stock ships from India through licensed distributors.
