Weight-based dosing and measuring suspensions

Dosing in this category is more often weight-based than in others, particularly for ivermectin and for children, and that is why the strength on the pack and the number of tablets both matter. A suspension is measured in millilitres at a stated concentration, so the bottle size alone does not tell you how many doses it holds.

Treating a household, and who should not take them

Two practical points come up repeatedly. First, threadworm and similar household infections are usually treated for everyone in the household at the same time, because reinfection between family members is the norm rather than the exception, and the treatment is paired with hot washing of bedding and clothing. Second, some of these are not used in pregnancy or below certain ages, and albendazole and mebendazole differ from each other on that point.

When a course has not worked

If a course has not worked, repeating it indefinitely is not the answer, because the parasite may not be the one assumed. A doctor can arrange the testing that settles it.

Absorption and food

Albendazole and ivermectin are both better absorbed when taken with a fatty meal, which is worth knowing because it changes how much of the dose actually reaches the parasite in tissue infections.
