Amoxicillin, co-amoxiclav and the penicillin family
Penicillins are among the most prescribed antibiotics, used for chest, ear, throat, dental and skin infections. Amoxicillin is the everyday member of the family, sold here as Novamox, Mox and Cipmox. Co-amoxiclav adds clavulanic acid, which stops some resistant bacteria from breaking the amoxicillin down; it is sold as Augmentin, Novaclav, Omniclav and others.
