About calcium channel blockers

Calcium channel blockers relax the muscle in the artery walls. Amlodipine, sold here as Amlip and Amlopress, is one of the most prescribed blood pressure medicines in the world. Nifedipine (Nicardia), cilnidipine and lercanidipine work the same way, while diltiazem (Dilzem) and verapamil (Calaptin) also slow the heart and are used for angina and some rhythm problems.

Ankle swelling is the most common side effect. Grapefruit juice raises the level of several of these drugs in the blood.
