Oral and topical antifungals at PCTMart

Fungal infections are treated quite differently depending on where they sit, and this category reflects that. For skin infections there are topical preparations: clotrimazole, ketoconazole and terbinafine creams, along with combination products pairing clotrimazole with beclometasone, and ketoconazole with zinc pyrithione in medicated shampoos. Tubes are measured in grams, commonly 10GM, 15GM, 20GM and 30GM, and shampoos in millilitres.

When a cream is not enough

For infections a cream cannot reach (nails, scalp and systemic infection), the oral medicines take over. Fluconazole is stocked at 50MG, 150MG, 200MG and 400MG, itraconazole at 100MG and 200MG, terbinafine at 250MG, ketoconazole at 200MG, and griseofulvin for certain scalp and nail infections. Voriconazole is carried for serious systemic infection.

Course length is where most treatment fails

Duration is the thing people most often get wrong. A skin infection may clear in a fortnight of topical treatment, while a toenail infection typically needs an oral course running for three months or longer, because the medicine works as the nail grows out. Stopping when the nail looks better, rather than when the course is finished, is the usual reason it comes back. Equally, a single 150MG fluconazole is a recognised approach for some simple infections while others need weeks.

Interactions and when to get advice

The oral antifungals in this group deserve care with other medicines. Itraconazole and ketoconazole in particular interact with statins, some blood pressure treatments, certain sedatives and a long list beyond that, and several affect liver enzymes. Tell your pharmacist everything else you take, and speak to a doctor if an infection is spreading, painful or not settling. All stock ships from India through licensed distributors and carries a minimum of twelve months of shelf life on despatch.

Applying creams and medicated shampoos

A note on technique, since it changes results as much as the medicine does. Creams are generally applied a little beyond the visible edge of the affected area, because the fungus extends past what you can see, and continued for a period after the skin looks normal. Medicated shampoos are usually left in contact with the scalp for several minutes rather than rinsed straight out. Follow the directions on your pack and ask a pharmacist if they differ from this.
