About mood stabilisers

Mood stabilisers are used to treat and prevent the highs and lows of bipolar disorder. Lithium is sold here as Monolith and T-Lith, lamotrigine as Lamitor and Lametec, sodium valproate as Encorate Chrono and carbamazepine as Zeptol; the last three are also epilepsy medicines.

Lithium needs regular blood tests to keep its level safe, and valproate must not be used in pregnancy. These are long-term treatments managed by a doctor.
