Azithromycin and the macrolides

Macrolides are often the choice for people allergic to penicillin, and they cover chest infections, some sexually transmitted infections and skin infections. Azithromycin, sold here as Azithral, Azimax and Azicip, is popular because a course is short, often three to five days. Clarithromycin (Clariface), erythromycin (Althrocin, Eryocin) and roxithromycin (Roxikem) are taken over longer courses.

Macrolides interact with a number of other medicines, including some heart and cholesterol treatments, so check with a doctor or pharmacist first.
