About Toplap Gel

Toplap Gel is Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd's lidocaine and priloc gel, in a tube of 10gm. Lidocaine and prilocaine together form a local anaesthetic mixture used on the skin, sold as EMLA and, in spray form for premature ejaculation, under several brands.

What it is used for

Applied to the penis, the lidocaine and prilocaine combination lowers sensitivity to delay ejaculation in men with premature ejaculation. In cream form it is also used to numb the skin before needle procedures and minor surgery.

How it works

Lidocaine and prilocaine both block sodium channels in nerve endings, so touch and pain signals are not passed on. Used together they numb the skin more deeply than either alone. On the penis, the reduced sensation delays the ejaculation reflex.

How it is taken

The spray or cream is applied to the head and shaft of the penis, usually ten to fifteen minutes before intercourse, then excess is wiped off before sex. Use a condom if it cannot be fully absorbed, since it can numb the partner. Follow the directions on the pack and from your doctor, and do not apply to broken skin.

Side effects

  • Reduced sensation, sometimes enough to affect an erection.n- Skin redness, burning, itching or swelling at the site.n- Numbness or irritation in a partner who is exposed.n- Prilocaine can, rarely, cause methaemoglobinaemia, which turns the lips and skin bluish and needs urgent care.

Precautions

Not for people allergic to amide local anaesthetics, or with a deficiency of G6PD or methaemoglobinaemia. Do not apply to open sores, and keep it away from the eyes and mouth. Wash your hands after use. Use with caution in people taking other methaemoglobin-inducing drugs such as some antibiotics and sulfonamides.
