Alpostin 500MCG Inj (Alprostadil)

Alpostin 500MCG Inj is Samarth Life Sciences Pvt Ltd's alprostadil injection, 500 mg, in a ampoule of 1ml ampoule. Alprostadil is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 that widens blood vessels and is injected into the penis to produce an erection.

Alprostadil is prescribed for erectile dysfunction when tablets are not suitable or have failed, and as a diagnostic aid to test blood flow to the penis. It is sold as Caverject and Edex for injection and as Muse for insertion into the urethra. In babies, a different preparation keeps a duct in the heart open until surgery.

Alprostadil relaxes the smooth muscle in the penis and widens the arteries, so blood fills the spongy tissue and an erection follows within five to twenty minutes whether or not there is sexual stimulation. It works locally, bypassing the nerve and hormonal signalling that tablets rely on.

It is injected with a fine needle into the side of the shaft of the penis, using the dose, technique and site shown by a doctor or nurse, and not more than once in 24 hours or three times a week. The erection typically lasts 30 to 60 minutes. Start with the lowest dose, and follow the pack leaflet.

• Pain in the penis, which is the most common effect.n- Bruising or a small bleed at the injection site.n- A prolonged erection of more than four hours (priapism), which is a medical emergency.n- Fibrosis or scarring, with penile curvature or hard lumps, after repeated use.n- Dizziness, low blood pressure and a fast heartbeat.

Seek emergency help if an erection lasts more than four hours. It is not for men with sickle cell disease, leukaemia, an implanted penile device, or any condition that makes sexual activity unwise. Use a condom if a partner is pregnant. Rotate the injection site and have the penis checked regularly for scarring. Keep ampoules as the pack directs.
